The Challenge: Rapid Hospitality Hiring in a Constrained Market

House Made Hospitality (HMH), a prominent and expanding Sydney-based hospitality group, approached Rent a Recruiter with a time-sensitive challenge: to build a complete opening team for their new venue, This Way Canteen, within three weeks.

The timing was particularly difficult. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the hospitality sector experienced a significant talent drain, with over 500,000 fewer overseas workers in the market and many skilled professionals having transitioned to other industries. Hiring in this environment was proving increasingly difficult, with demand far exceeding supply.

HMH required a solution that could deliver results quickly, at scale, and with precision.

Our Talent Acquisition Strategy

To meet this challenge, Rent a Recruiter deployed an embedded recruitment model, working closely with the HMH team to manage the entire hiring process from sourcing to placement. Our strategy included:

  • High-Volume Candidate Outreach: Over 1,000 targeted reach-outs across job boards, databases, social channels, and referrals.
  • Streamlined Screening & Selection: Rapid qualification processes to assess availability, experience, and cultural alignment.
  • Trial-to-Hire Approach: Coordinated working trials to assess performance in real-world conditions before final selection.

Our immediate focus was to recruit 29 critical roles across kitchen, barista, and front-of-house operations in time for launch.

Expanding Support Beyond Venue Staffing

Following the successful launch of This Way Canteen, HMH engaged Rent a Recruiter to support additional business-critical roles at head office level. We managed the recruitment process for:

  • Digital Marketing Manager
  • Senior Graphic Designer
  • Executive Chef for a forthcoming venue opening in Bondi

This transition from frontline recruitment to head office hiring demonstrated the scalability and flexibility of our embedded model.
