“At the start, there were just the two of us and a potted plant,” he says. “The dark days.” Instead of operating on the basis of fees per placement, Yala established itself as a service provider, paid on a monthly subscription basis.
“The hard part was getting it off the ground but we hired well.” That was critical as Prost realised that managing people was not his forte. The partners also soon found out that “hammering people with KPIs [key performance indicators] every Friday” was not motivational for their small but growing team.
“We’re much more into the servant-leadership model now.” Part of what brought about this Pauline conversion was Back for Business, a development programme for people who have returned to Ireland to set up a business, which included mentorship.
